I am trying to put music onto my new mp3 player using windows media player version 11.?

I've managed to rip music to my hard drive. How do I convert it to MP3 format? When I'm ripping it it saves is in WMA format which works but when I click to save it in MP3 format I get a message saying that I can't do it? Does my software need updating?
